Artist Biography

Passion and Exuberance for Color is Sandy.

Born and raised in San Francisco, Sandy has always appreciated The City’s diversity; Color, smells and sounds drew her to world travel. The City’s Asian culture enticed her to China in 1978 when the People’s Republic first opened. She has followed the Asian Colors, surrounded by sounds and smells, to Bhutan, India, Japan, Singapore, Nepal, Thailand, Tibet, and more. Color has led her to South America and vibrant European places. But, Venice, Italy is the current magnet.

These world destinations allowed Sandy’s 25 year interior design career to brim with Color. Today Sandy’s passion for Color and Photography has melded for the pleasure of her viewers. For example, Carnivale in Venice provided many award winning photographs.

I want my photographs poised between abstraction and realism creating a colorful explosion, an intense and sensual fantasy of that special place, person and fleeting moment.—Sandra Marill Chandler

Sandy entered the artistic world with a BA in Interior Design from San Jose State University and then into business with Sandra Chandler Design Associates in 1977 bringing her Color to commercial and residential design. She grew with her business and even taught others in Bay Area design organizations; always showing others the beauty of Color.

Color, along with sound and smell, have carved and molded Sandy’s life with intense emotion. With her life and career so shaped Sandy holds the catalyst for her next big adventure—and there's always a next big adventure with Color.

My Photographic Mission and Meaning

As a discerning photographer, my greatest hope is to capture the essence of that special place, that special person and that special fleeting moment.

I am entranced by the exuberance of color; the excitement of the shape and form that when combined with color help make up the drama of the moment. The world is a kaleidoscope; surrounding us daily with color not seen by most of us. Travel puts us in a new place with a fresh viewpoint. I want my photography to capture and enhance this.

Each place, like a person, is unique, with a style and a personality of its own…the photographer has only one job; to reveal that character and communicate it to the viewer.—Jay Maisel, 1986

Places, emotions and cultures in a photograph take on deeper meanings with rich color. I want to portray the mood of the color and that ‘slice of time’. Whether quietly monochromatic or loud and gaudy, I want COLOR to capture the mood.

I delight in sights of abstract color that appeal and strike the imagination. My personal vision is satisfied when I select carefully the color and composition and combine it with my personal style of organizing chaos into simplicity and clarity.

Venice, Italy is one of the most picturesque cities in the world, and as a backdrop, Carnevale is shown as a vivid, vibrant colorful dream. The excitement of this ten-day celebration is all part of a spectacular journey. It was my dream to photograph Venice’s Carnevale and to capture the spirit of the magic and excitement of this real life fantasy.

I want my photographs poised between abstraction and realism creating a colorful explosion, an intense and sensual fantasy of that special place, person and fleeting moment.
